On August 29, Reuters reported that an Iranian rocket exploded on its launch pad at Imam Khomeini Space Center in northern Iran before its scheduled launch on Thursday, according to an Iranian official. "It was due to some technical issues and it exploded but our young scientists are working to fix the problem," the official added.

The United States would only lift its sanctions on Iran after reaching a comprehensive deal on its nuclear program, according to US National Security Advisor John Bolton in an interview with Radio Free Europe on Tuesday.

These comments came just one day after US President Donald Trump said that he would be prepared to talk with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, something that has not happened since the 1979 revolution. Rouhani responded that a face-to-face meeting between him and his US counterpart could only happen after US sanctions were lifted; a notion that Bolton firmly rejected.

Federal authorities in the US have accused a man of plotting to export metal-processing machines to Iran, a move that violated the US’s non-nuclear proliferation and terrorism sanctions.

According to the 21-count indictment unsealed Tuesday by federal prosecutors, Mehdi Hashemi, also known as Eddie Hashemi, is accused of taking part in a scheme to export computer numerical control machines, which are used to process raw materials, such as metals that could be used to create nuclear weapons, to precise standards. These machines are export-controlled to Iran for nuclear non-proliferation and anti-terrorism reasons.
