As we approach the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances (August 30), Amnesty International said that the Iranian authorities’ continued failure to disclose the fate of thousands of political dissidents, forcibly disappeared and extrajudicially executed in the secret 1988 prison massacres, is a crisis that has been ignored by the international community for decades.

An Iranian court has sentenced writer and satirist Keyomars Marzban to 11 years in prison after convicting him of charges including cooperation with the US, state media reported.

Marzban had been facing charges of “assembly and collusion against national security, cooperation with a hostile state, spreading propaganda against the system, and insulting sanctities and officials,” IRNA quoted his lawyer as saying.

In the 1980s, the Iranian authorities arrested the parents of human rights activist Ehsan Qaraee and, following a fatwa by then-supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini, murdered his father.

Qaraee is now raising awareness of the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, which Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have branded “crimes against humanity”, in order to get justice.

The British Council worker sentenced to 10 years in prison in Iran for spying on behalf of the UK is being used by the Iranian authorities as a "bargaining chip", according to her fiancé.

Aras Amiri, 33, lost an appeal against her prison sentence, for the charges of "acting against national security", earlier this week. Her lawyer had to be approved by the authorities and she had no access to them in the appeal process, so it cannot be considered a fair trial.

The British charity worker wrongfully jailed in Iran is now having her access to her family restricted, according to her husband.

Richard Ratcliffe explained that new rules instituted by the Iranian authorities mean that Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe can’t make international calls to him in London and is only allowed to see their five-year-old daughter, who is being looked after by her grandparents in Tehran, once a month.

Amnesty International is urging people all over the world to protest the torture of a critically ill cancer patient and political prisoner being held in Iran’s Raja’i Shahr prison.

Arash Sadeghi, a human right defender, is being tortured by the Iranian authorities because they are purposefully denying him access to cancer treatment and causing severe pain and suffering. His right arm has become swollen, paralysed, and lost all sensation because of a serious post-operation infection that the authorities left untreated. He is also being denied critical bone marrow tests to see if his cancer has spread. In short, his life is being put at risk.

An Iranian political prisoner has written an open letter calling out what he described as “legitimate and legal corruption” at Tehran’s Evin Prison.

In the letter, written on August 15, jailed blogger Soheil Arabi said that new limitations on prisoners, especially restricting their contact with the outside world, have been enforced since the new head of Evin Prison took over.

The Iranian authorities have hanged seven prisoners in two prisons in the past week.

On Saturday, August 10, two prisoners were hanged in the central prison of Mashhad, according to a report on Sunday by the state-run Khorasan daily. The paper did not provide the victims’ names, but said that a full report would be published in the coming days.
